Hall of Fame

Yeah, you can be the greatest
You can be the best
You can be the King Kong banging on your chest

You could beat the world
You could beat the war
You could talk to God, go banging on his door

You can throw your hands up
You can beat the clock (yeah)
You can move a mountain
You can break rocks
You can be a master
Don't wait for luck
Dedicate yourself and you gon' find yourself

Standing in the hall of fame (yeah)
And the world's gonna know your name (yeah)
'Cause you burn with the brightest flame (yeah)
And the world's gonna know your name (yeah)
And you'll be on the walls of the hall of fame

This song seems to be the theme song for all graduation and banquet slideshows this year. And it brings me to tears every single time. But then I heard it on my way home the other day and got to thinking about how it could apply to parents. How many times have I done just this...

You can go the distance
You can run the mile
You can walk straight through hell with a smile

And then I realized that if you asked Lefty and Boo, they would say I have done exactly this...

You could be the hero
You could get the gold
Breaking all the records they thought never could be broke

Yeah, do it for your people
Do it for your pride
How you ever gonna know if you never even try?

Do it for your country
Do it for your name
'Cause there's gonna be a day...

So is there a Hall of Fame for parents? For single parents? For the parent that tries their damnedest to hold their family together? Does it matter if the world knows your name? I don't particularly care, as long as my babies think that I belong there.

When you're standing in the hall of fame (yeah)
And the world's gonna know your name (yeah)
'Cause you burn with the brightest flame (yeah)
And the world's gonna know your name (yeah)
And you'll be on the walls of the hall of fame

Be a champion, be a champion, be a champion, be a champion
On the walls of the hall of fame

These are roles that all parents fill.
Every. Single. Minute. Of. Every. Single. Day.

Be students
(we learn from our children)

Be teachers
(we teach our children)

Be politicians
(we negotiate and debate with our children)

Be preachers
(we guide our children)

Be believers
(we know our children can do anything)

Be leaders
(we lead our children by example)

Be astronauts
(we build rockets from boxes for our children)

Be champions
(in our children's eyes, we can't lose)

Be truth seekers
(our honesty breeds honest children)
So yeah, we are all...
Standing in the hall of fame (yeah, yeah, yeah)
And the world's gonna know your name (yeah, yeah, yeah)
'Cause you burn with the brightest flame (yeah, yeah, yeah)
And the world's gonna know your name (yeah, yeah, yeah)
And you'll be on the walls of the hall of fame

And we can...
(You can be a champion)
You could be the greatest
(You can be a champion)
You can be the best
(You can be a champion)
You can be the king kong banging on your chest

(You can be a champion)
You could beat the world
(You can be a champion)
You could beat the war
(You can be a champion)
You could talk to God, go banging on his door

(You can be a champion)
You can throw your hands up
(You can be a champion)
You can beat the clock
(You can be a champion)
You can move a mountain
(You can be a champion)
You can break rocks

(You can be a champion)
You can be a master
(You can be a champion)
Don't wait for luck
(You can be a champion)
Dedicate yourself and you gon' find yourself
(You can be a champion)
